JOB SEARCH CHECK LIST
Use these steps to help make your job search a success!
Create an account in Handshake.
Identify your personal strengths, skills, interests, and values - you will be communicating these to employers
through your cover letter, resume, and interview.
Write a resume and cover letter. Then have them critiqued by the CMC.
Upload your prepared professional documents into Handshake.
Create a reference list of 3-5 references.
Keep track of your job search activity in a notebook or electronically (such as in a spreadsheet).
Schedule a mock interview with the CMC.
Research industries, employers, and locations:
• Shows employers you understand what they do and why you want to work for them.
• Glassdoor and LinkedIn are two good tools to research employers in addition to their websites.
Employ several job-search strategies because one is NOT enough! These include: Handshake, career events,
professional societies, employer websites, and your network of faculty, family, classmates, alumni, and employers.
Final Tips:
• Start early - 3 to 6 months before your preferred start date.
• Be positive, persistent, and follow-up.
• Be professional/enthusiastic/honest/thoughtful.
• Make sure to demonstrate a “can do, will do” attitude.
